The International Academy of Sustainable Development (UZOD), in cooperation with the Chamber of Economy / Commerce of the Federation of BiH, is organizing for the second time a major international conference “BUILD A SUSTAINABLE BIH 2”, which will be held on 17 and 18 October 2024 at Hotel Hills Sarajevo.

This year’s patrons of the conference are Ms. Lidija Bradara, President of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Minister Prof. Dr. Nasiha Pozder, Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism, and Dr. Davor Pranjić, Vice President of the Republic of Srpska.

The media patron of the conference is FENA – the Federal News Agency.

We invite you to honor us with your presence and join us in strengthening the idea of sustainable development, which is the only one that ensures a future for all of us. You can contribute in various ways: by actively participating in the conference, through sponsorship, scientific and professional work, as well as by taking part in the opportunity to ask questions to speakers and panelists.

For the first time in BiH, a special session is being prepared in which we will discuss communication in environmental protection processes. Clear expression, consideration of facts, respect for interlocutors, and respect for facts are elements that are lacking at all levels of communication in BH society. Special attention will be given to the media as a key actor in sustainable development processes.

The global world is facing numerous challenges such as climate change, the transition from a linear to a circular economy, pronounced uneven development among countries, aligning the needs of society with economic entities, uncontrolled growth in energy prices, and wars. The banking sector, regulators, as well as consumers and employees, increasingly require economic entities not only to be good managers of financial capital, but also of natural and social capital, and to have the necessary sustainable business model and governance framework that supports this.

Sustainability reporting, i.e. ESG reporting, owes its rise to investors and financial institutions that demand greater transparency of investment portfolios. It has become clear to the investment community that, in addition to financial information, information on environmental, social and governance risks for a company is becoming increasingly important, as it can also have a significant impact on the company’s financial performance. Therefore, more and more investors are incorporating ESG elements into their investment decision-making process, making ESG increasingly important from the perspective of securing capital, both debt and equity.

As Bosnia and Herzegovina has entered accession negotiations with the EU, it cannot and will not be exempt from sustainability reporting under the prescribed CSRS standard.

Preparing a Sustainability Statement for your organization in accordance with ESRS standards will very soon become directly or indirectly mandatory, while CBA obligations are already at our doorstep..

At the conference, along with modern presentation technologies, we will offer the latest information on the already advanced ESG environmental reporting system (Environmental social and governance) contained in the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), as part of the so-called Green Deal. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) entered into force on 5 January 2023.

On the second day of the conference, we will focus on sustainable environmental management in BiH and examine our opportunities as well as our risks.

The management and technical equipment of utility companies in BiH is one of the major obstacles to quality waste management. Waste management equipment manufacturers will offer new methodologies for separate municipal waste collection and solutions for communication skills related to citizens’ awareness of separate waste collection and the production of fuel from municipal waste. The conference will also focus on the remediation of waste landfills that are in very poor condition, and their management is concerning.

This year we will pay special attention to the management of municipal wastewater and industrial wastewater, as well as the disposal of sludge from wastewater treatment plants.

Waste from agriculture and forestry is a significant, and environmentally friendly, energy source that is developing rapidly. The need for further strengthening the development of systems for converting these wastes into energy (Waste to Energy W2E) is a new challenge for creating technologically environmentally friendly solutions. Hazardous radioactive and medical waste represent one of the greatest challenges in the countries of the region, while in the EU they are part of standard waste disposal procedures.

The quality and reliability of W2E plants is the main prerequisite for environmentally sustainable waste management. For this reason, a significant place at the conference will be taken by manufacturers of incineration equipment with new combustion technologies, as well as waste gas treatment technologies, who have experience worldwide. We will also draw on the experience of recently built W2E plants in the region, including all the problems that accompany these processes. Very important are the experiences from pyrolytic processes and Waste to Hydrogen (W2H) technologies, while we will also hear the latest achievements in the commercialization of these procedures.

As the only sustainable energy recovery of waste currently offered in the countries of the region, energy recovery in the cement industry is presented as the only environmentally acceptable solution, together with very responsible economic entities that manage such systems in BiH.

Leading scientists and environmental experts, manufacturers of equipment for various forms of waste recovery, communication experts, representatives of utility companies, and representatives of state, regional and local authorities will try to answer all these and other questions of sustainable development in BiH. Therefore, join us at our conference and offer your technologies, opinions, and professional and scientific competencies to the BH public and beyond.

Only together,

through the exchange of experience,

by presenting opportunities

and knowledge, can we make

Bosnia and Herzegovina sustainable!
