Bosnia and Herzegovina, which today is considered a regional leader thanks to its rich heritage and experience in energy, continues to follow modern trends in this field. In this context, Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week (SECW) represents a unique gathering of key actors from the energy and climate change sectors.
SECW 2025 is being implemented with the leading partnership of the European Union, and significant support is also provided by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, the Ministry for Human Rights and Refugees of BiH, the Vice President of the Federation of BiH Igor Stojanović, the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Industry of the Federation of BiH, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of the Federation of BiH, the Government of the Brčko District of BiH, the Government of Sarajevo Canton, the City of Sarajevo, the City of Mostar and the Faculty of Economics of the University of Sarajevo. In addition to the above institutions, support also comes from numerous international and domestic partners: EU4Energy, a project funded by the European Union, the World Energy Council (WEC), the Energy Community Secretariat, GIZ, UNDP, UNEP, the World Bank (WB), CCAC, the European Investment Bank (EIB), KfW, EBRD, IFC, DPM Metals, Caritas BiH, PIN, Raiffeisen Bank, Elektroprivreda BiH and HZHB, as well as the energy exchanges NORD POOL and BSP Energy Exchange LLC, with the contribution of other significant organizations. The gold partner of SECW 2025 is Energoinvest.
The organizers of Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week closely monitor the situation on the BiH scene regarding energy and climate change and, accordingly, have created this year’s conference program, which will provide answers and spark discussion on key energy issues in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Therefore, to great satisfaction and honor, the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina supports the 3rd Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week.
“This event represents an important opportunity to bring together experts, institutions and representatives of local communities in one place in order to exchange ideas and experiences in the field of energy transition, environmental protection and responses to climate change. We believe that such exchange is crucial for creating sustainable policies and solutions that will contribute to the development not only of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but of the entire region. The Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina will continue to support joint efforts toward a more sustainable and safer environment,” said Siniša Milić, Mayor of the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
One of the supporting partners of this year’s event is the Development Bank of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has for many years acted as a key mechanism in the implementation of projects of strategic importance for the Federation and Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a reliable partner to the economy, the Bank provides financial support in areas that form the backbone of economic development.
The operations of the Development Bank of the Federation of BiH are based on the Strategic Document for the period 2024–2027, aligned with the Development Strategy of the Federation of BiH and the Work Plan of the Government of the Federation of BiH. Among the key priorities, renewable energy sources and energy efficiency stand out in particular as the foundations of the transition toward a more sustainable society and a more competitive economy.
Already today, the Bank offers favorable credit lines for projects in these areas – with stable and fixed interest rates, long repayment periods and grace periods – enabling businesses to plan investments sustainably and reduce financial burdens.
Representatives of this institution will speak in more detail at panel discussions about the instruments and programs offered by the Development Bank of the Federation of BiH to businesses, as well as about cooperation with development banks in the region, the European Association of Development Banks and the Council of Europe Development Bank, with special emphasis on support for projects that facilitate the transition of the economy to sustainable business models and compliance with European standards.
This year’s Energy and Climate Week also includes active participation by DPM, an international mining company headquartered in Canada, with operations and projects in Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Ecuador. With more than 20 years of experience in the Balkans, DPM has established itself as a reliable company in developing and managing mining operations, continuously transforming projects into world-class operations that meet the highest standards of safety, environmental protection and productivity. The company’s purpose is to discover resources and create value for shared progress and growth, supported by six core values: safety and well-being of people, mutual respect and inclusion, care for the environment, innovation and boldness, transparency and accountability, and partnership with communities. These values guide all aspects of DPM’s work and form the foundation of its culture of responsible and sustainable mining.
DPM’s portfolio also includes the Vareš Operation, a high-quality deposit of precious metals and polymetals. Designed to process around 850,000 tonnes of ore annually, the Rupice mine produces silver-zinc and lead-silver-gold concentrates. With an initial life expectancy of approximately 15 years, Vareš is positioned to generate significant value for all DPM stakeholders.
“We are greatly honored to support Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week 2025 and contribute to the dialogue on the role of critical minerals in the energy transition. At DPM Metals, we are committed to advancing sustainable mining practices that not only bring value to Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also strengthen regional and European supply chains for a greener future. Achieving our climate goals depends on metals and minerals — but success is not automatic. It requires a thoughtful strategy: diversifying sources, increasing processing and recycling capacity, securing fast but high-quality permits, and placing communities at the center. If we do this right, the energy transition will bring both climate benefits and significant local development,” said DPM Director Paul Smallbone:
“The main goal of this five-day event is to educate the public, as well as all relevant stakeholders, about the importance and concrete steps of a just energy transition, taking into account climate goals and the need for decarbonization of the energy sector. Through planned activities and panel sessions, efforts will be made to bring closer and simplify the positive practices of regional countries in improving energy efficiency, which will further encourage dialogue, cooperation and knowledge exchange, and thus the development of innovation,” said the SECW program committee.
